Former Tottenham Star Etienne Capoue Switches to Basketball After Villarreal Exit
Former France international and Tottenham midfielder Etienne Capoue has embarked on a new athletic journey after retiring from football. Following his release from Villarreal at the end of last season, the 36-year-old has traded the football pitch for the basketball court, joining third-tier Spanish team Jovens de L’Eliana in Valencia.
A New Chapter in Spain
After leaving Villarreal, where his contract expired, Capoue decided to explore a different sport, making his debut for the basketball team in a recent 78-70 victory over CB Morvedre. Capoue, who spent the last few years of his football career in Spain, seems to be relishing this new venture, signaling that a return to professional football is unlikely.
A Distinguished Football Career
Capoue’s football career spanned over a decade, starting with his debut for Ligue 1 side Toulouse in 2007. He made his Premier League move in 2013 when he signed for Tottenham Hotspur, spending two years at the club before joining Watford, where he played for five and a half seasons. In 2020, he moved to Villarreal, where he enjoyed success, notably winning the Europa League in 2021 after defeating Manchester United in the final.
