UCL’s Gundogan Impressions during City Extend Unbeaten Run
Following his outstanding performance in Manchester City’s 4-0 Champions League triumph over Slovan Bratislava, Pep Guardiola has praised Ilkay Gundogan. Opening the score in City’s overwhelming away game, the German midfielder helped the team to match the record already achieved by rivals Manchester United by extending their undefeated Champions League run to 25 games.
Though Gundogan’s performance against Slovan Bratislava was outstanding, Guardiola was open about the midfielder’s past performance. After one season with Barcelona, the 33-year-old returned to City this summer. Last weekend City drew 1-1 with Newcastle United, and the 33-year-old gave what Guardiola said to be “one of the worst” displays he has seen from Gundogan in eight or nine years.
WHAT PEP GUARDIOLA SAID
In his post-game remarks, Guardiola observed:
“Today he performed at the level we know he can do it. He is quite powerful in mindset. Though it happens, the game against Newcastle was not particularly excellent, among the worst I have seen from him over the past eight or nine years. He must play as it is rhythm. He made a great game in his capacity as a holding midfielder; he is quite smart and different from his objective.”
As the team strives to keep its momentum in both local and European competitions, Gundogan’s capacity to recover and perform at a high level in the Champions League highlights his resilience and value to the team.
