Jannik Sinner Wins US Open After Following Positive Test Controversy

Jannik Sinner Reflects on US Open Victory After Difficult Period

Jannik Sinner expressed his joy and relief after winning the US Open, marking his second Grand Slam title of the year, following a challenging period in his career. The world number one breezed past American Taylor Fritz in Sunday’s final, but his triumph came after a controversy that tested his resilience.

Six days before the tournament, it was revealed that Sinner had been cleared of any wrongdoing after twice testing positive for low levels of a metabolite of clostebol—a steroid used to build muscle mass—back in March. The International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) ruled that the Italian had been inadvertently contaminated with the substance by his physiotherapist, Giacomo Naldi.

“This title means so much because the last period of my career was not easy,” the 23-year-old said. “The investigation was, and still is, on my mind. It’s not that it’s gone, but when I’m on court, I try to handle the situation the best possible way.”

Sinner continued, “I’m happy with how I managed to handle this situation, and I’m just excited to have this trophy with me.”
