Lewis Hamilton, who will turn 40 in January, has recently opened up about his retirement plans and what might drive him to leave Formula 1. Ahead of a highly anticipated move to Ferrari, the British driver explained why he continues to race despite his long career in the sport.
Hamilton, who has signed a multi-year contract with Ferrari, will enter his 19th season in 2025. He mentioned that despite the lengthy career, he still feels a “huge excitement” before each race, and this passion is one of the key reasons he continues competing. Reflecting on the future, Hamilton shared his thoughts on possibly stepping away, saying:
“Some days I think, ‘Damn, I don’t know how much longer I can keep doing this,’ and other days I feel like I could go on forever.”
Hamilton admitted that, like other athletes, he sometimes wishes for a break, as Formula 1 doesn’t provide much downtime during the season. However, he emphasized that mentally, he has a plan for how long he’d like to continue, but the key is maintaining his love for the sport.
Hamilton hopes to never lose his passion for racing and that this enduring love for Formula 1 will keep him going for the foreseeable future.
