Luton Town Issues Strong Statement Against Racial Abuse of Elijah Adebayo

Luton Town has officially denounced the racist taunts aimed at striker Elijah Adebayo, labeling the offender’s actions “cowardly” and urging him to confront Adebayo face-to-face. The team reported the matter to the police and Instagram’s parent company, Meta, in order to conduct a comprehensive investigation after Adebayo received a racist comment on Instagram after their 2-1 loss to Sunderland.

Regretfully, Adebayo has been the target of attacks before. The 26-year-old has frequently experienced similar abuse in the last few years, both online and at games. Notable instances of the abuse occurred in October 2022 during games against Nottingham Forest and Tottenham Hotspur, and Luton Town has previously condemned it in statements. The club has actively worked for justice and accountability and has often demanded an end to this kind of prejudice.

Luton’s Bold Response

In a powerful statement titled “Is it ever going to stop?”, Luton expressed frustration and anger, emphasizing the persistent nature of the abuse aimed at Adebayo:

“At 8.28 pm BST on Wednesday evening, an account in the UK on Instagram messaged Elijah with a racist comment.”

The club went on to challenge the individual responsible, urging them to “have the balls to come to Kenilworth Road and say it to his face.”
