PSG Boss Reveals Reason Behind Manuel Ugarte Sale to Manchester United
Manuel Ugarte joined Manchester United from PSG this summer in a £50.7m deal, including potential add-ons. The Uruguayan midfielder, capped 22 times for his national team, was a key starter for PSG last season. Despite his reputation, PSG’s sporting director Luis Campos shed light on why the club decided to let Ugarte leave, even labeling him “one of the best central midfielders in Europe.”
Campos explained that Ugarte’s departure was not due to his footballing ability but a result of a shift in the club’s project. “There was a change of project last year, a new way of playing,” Campos told SportItalia. With Luis Enrique taking over as PSG manager in July 2023, the club adopted a different footballing philosophy, which factored into the decision.
Additionally, Campos hinted at concerns over Ugarte’s injury history. “He had a difficult year, two important injuries that, as he himself told me, did not allow him to be at the level he expected and we expected,” Campos explained, implying that these injuries may have impacted his long-term future at PSG.
