Portuguese superstar Cristiano Ronaldo has made a reference to his Manchester United days. WHAT HAPPENED?

Ronaldo made a fantastic return to Manchester United in the summer of 2021. While his first season back was successful, his second season was less so, as Erik ten Hag moved the star forward to the bench. As a result, Ronaldo openly criticized the Red Devils and Ten Hag in an interview, which led to the termination of his contract. The Portugal captain has now made more references to United while discussing his future.

WHAT DID RONALDO SAY?

Speaking to A Bola, Ronaldo responded to questions about whether he was prepared to represent the national team as a substitute:
“I always have the idea of being in the starting eleven. That’s what you think. I will always think that I will be in the starting eleven until the end of my career.

“I always respect the decisions of the coach, as well as the clubs I play for… They treated me badly once or twice (laughs). They were very disrespectful by doing that. But seriously, when it comes to professional ethics, I always respect the coaches’ decisions.

“There can always be discussions when professional ethics are not respected, but that’s a separate issue. What I feel now and what the coach’s words show is that I will continue to be a value for the national team, and I will be the first to accept it. If not, if I’m not a value, I will be the first to leave.

“But if I leave, I will leave with a clear conscience, as always, because I know who I am, what I can do, what I have done, and what I will continue to do. I see the present time very positively because the most important thing for me is to face every moment and every cycle, and when the cycle is good, I feel happy.”

Ronaldo received a lot of criticism for his role in Portugal’s poor performances in both Euro 2024 and the 2022 World Cup. The former Real Madrid star was benched by Fernando Santos in Qatar, but Roberto Martinez, who replaced Santos, ensured Ronaldo remained in the national team despite his on-field struggles. Martinez has stated that the 38-year-old player will continue to be a part of the starting eleven in the future. The 39-year-old forward will play in Portugal’s Nations League matches against Croatia and Scotland before returning to Saudi Arabia.
