Saudi Arabia Set to Host 2034 World Cup Amidst Controversy Over Timing, Alcohol Ban, and Human Rights

Saudi Arabia’s bid to host the 2034 World Cup is nearing final approval, with the FIFA General Assembly expected to confirm the decision on December 11. As the sole candidate, the Kingdom’s hosting rights seem almost certain, but the decision comes with concerns over human rights issues, the use of sport for ‘image cleansing,’ and potential logistical challenges around timing and alcohol policies.

Winter World Cup and Alcohol Policies on the Agenda

A major consideration for the Saudi-hosted tournament is whether it will take place in winter, similar to the 2022 Qatar World Cup, due to the country’s extreme summer heat. If held in winter, it could mirror the shift seen in 2022, which disrupted domestic football calendars but ensured player and fan safety.

The tournament’s alcohol policy is another topic of debate. Given that Saudi Arabia has strict regulations on alcohol consumption, a potential ban during the World Cup is on the agenda, raising questions about how this might affect fan experience and sponsor partnerships.

Human Rights Concerns

Saudi Arabia’s bid has faced significant scrutiny over its human rights record, with critics arguing that hosting the World Cup is part of a broader strategy to use sport for “sportswashing”—an attempt to improve the country’s global image.

In an interview with Sky Sports, Hammad Albarawi, one of Saudi Arabia’s World Cup officials, responded to some of the criticism. Albarawi emphasized that the tournament is being organized for the people of Saudi Arabia, with a focus on improving the quality of life for its citizens through sport. While he did not directly address human rights concerns, he highlighted that Saudi Arabia has hosted over 100 sports events in recent years, attracting more than 3 million fans who have experienced the country firsthand.

Addressing Social Reforms and Workers’ Rights

Saudi Arabia has invested heavily in its infrastructure in preparation for the World Cup, raising concerns over the treatment and rights of migrant workers involved in these projects. Responding to these criticisms, Albarawi pointed out that over 150 social reforms have been implemented in the last eight years, many of which aim to protect labor rights and expand opportunities for women. He added that the country is committed to fulfilling its social responsibilities as part of its vision for the future.

The Push for a Summer World Cup

Despite the possibility of hosting the tournament in winter to avoid extreme heat, Saudi officials have expressed a desire to host the World Cup in the traditional summer months. This raises potential logistical challenges, as playing in Saudi Arabia’s scorching summer temperatures could pose health risks for players and fans alike. The final decision on the tournament’s scheduling will likely depend on further evaluations of the country’s climate and infrastructure capabilities.

Looking Ahead to December’s Decision

With the FIFA General Assembly set to finalize Saudi Arabia’s hosting rights on December 11, the country stands ready to organize a World Cup that aims to bridge cultural gaps while confronting ongoing concerns about human rights and tournament logistics. If confirmed, the 2034 World Cup will add to the growing list of high-profile sporting events hosted by Saudi Arabia in recent years as part of its effort to increase its presence on the global sports stage.
