Manchester United legend Sir Alex Ferguson shared a powerful motivational message with newly appointed women’s team captain, Maya Le Tissier, as she prepares to lead the Red Devils into the 2024-25 Women’s Super League (WSL) season. The 22-year-old defender was named captain last month, succeeding Katie Zelem, who left the club to join NWSL side Angel City. Ella Toone, the current most-capped United player, has been appointed as her deputy.
In a recent video shared by the club, Ferguson, the iconic former manager of United’s men’s team, praised Le Tissier’s new role and offered words of encouragement as she takes on the responsibility of captaincy.
What Sir Alex Ferguson Said
“Well, Maya, may I congratulate you on this wonderful achievement. You have a responsibility to show your character for everyone. And to me, responsibility is taking charge of a great club. I think everyone will be delighted that you’ve got this responsibility,”
Ferguson, who guided Manchester United to numerous trophies during his reign, drew parallels between Le Tissier and legendary captains from the men’s team, mentioning Bryan Robson as an example of leadership to emulate. “Bryan Robson, who’s here today, was a fantastic captain. He had that great driving force about him that players responded to. And I think you can do that, without question,” Ferguson added.
Le Tissier, who has been with the club since 2022, will be looking to lead United to new heights as they aim for WSL glory this season under her leadership, with Ferguson’s words surely providing extra motivation.
