Wayne Rooney Charged by FA Following Red Card Incident in Plymouth’s Win

Following his dismissal from his team’s 2-1 EFL Championship victory against Blackburn Rovers, Plymouth Argyle manager Wayne Rooney has been formally charged by the Football Association (FA). Late in the game, Rooney protested Blackburn’s equalizing goal, earning a red card and being kicked from the touchline.

Rooney allegedly used harsh and/or offensive statements directed towards the match officials while disputing Blackburn’s goal, hence his ejection happened in the 87th minute. Rooney missed Morgan Whittaker’s dramatic stoppage-time winner for Plymouth, therefore guaranteeing the victory, after being sent off. Later on, Rooney said he celebrated so passionately in the tunnel that, in the fervor, he unintentionally shattered the glasses belonging to the club secretary.

FA’s Charges

In a statement, the FA detailed the charges against Rooney:

“Wayne Rooney has been charged following Plymouth Argyle’s match against Blackburn Rovers on Saturday, 5 October, in the EFL Championship. The manager’s conduct around the 87th minute was allegedly improper and/or he used abusive and/or insulting words towards a match official, which led to his dismissal. It’s further alleged that by returning to the field of play after being dismissed his behaviour was improper.”

The FA also cited Rooney’s return to the field of play after his dismissal as improper conduct, and the ex-Manchester United striker has until Tuesday, 15 October, to respond to the charges.
