Trabzonspor Disappoints This Season

Trabzonspor suffered a disappointing loss to Goztepe, going down 2-1 in the Trendyol Super Lig, leaving fans disheartened in both the league and Europe.

The burgundy-blues have managed to win only 4 of the 15 official matches played in the Super Lig and European competitions this season, resulting in a win rate of just 26%. They drew 8 matches and lost 3.

The Black Sea team, unable to win two consecutive matches in the league, sits far from the title race with only 12 points after 9 weeks, averaging 1.33 points per game. Furthermore, they were eliminated early from European competitions, failing to progress to the group stages. The team did not achieve the desired results in the UEFA Europa League and UEFA Conference League qualifying matches, leading to a disappointing start to both their league and European campaigns.

League Matches Overview
In the first week of the league, Trabzonspor drew 0-0 away against Net Global Sivasspor, then had a bye in the second week. Their match against Bellona Kayserispor in the third week was postponed due to a European cup match. In the fourth week, they drew 0-0 away against Ikas Eyupspor, followed by a 1-1 home draw against Besiktas in the fifth week and another 2-2 draw against Bellona Kayserispor in a postponed match. In the sixth week, Trabzonspor returned from Gaziantep FK with a goalless draw, but achieved their first victory in the seventh week at home against TUMOSAN Konyaspor with a 3-2 scoreline. They drew 1-1 in the eighth week away against Atakas Hatayspor, before narrowly defeating RAMS Basaksehir 1-0 at home. However, they lost 2-1 away to Goztepe in the tenth week.

Struggles Away from Home
Trabzonspor has not won any of their away matches, collecting only 4 points from 5 league matches played under three different coaches, resulting in an average of 0.8 points per game. Under Abdullah Avci’s management, they drew 0-0 against Net Global Sivasspor in the first week. In their next away match, they faced Ikas Eyüpspor under temporary coach Ihsan Derelioglu, ending in another goalless draw. Under newly appointed coach Senol Gunes, Trabzonspor played three away matches but failed to secure a victory, drawing against Gaziantep FK (0-0) and Atakas Hatayspor (1-1) before losing to Goztepe.

Ending Their Unbeaten Run
Trabzonspor’s loss to Goztepe marked their first defeat in 175 days, breaking a streak that dated back to May 4 of last season, when they lost 3-1 to Samsunspor. Following that match last season, they won all three of their next matches, but this season, after 9 weeks, they recorded 2 wins, 6 draws, and 1 loss.

Early Exit from Europe
After finishing third last season, Trabzonspor entered the UEFA Europa League from the second qualifying round. They won 2-0 away and 1-0 at home against Slovakia’s Ruzomberok in the first qualifying round. However, in the third qualifying round, they were eliminated by Austria’s Rapid Wien, losing 1-0 at home and 2-0 away. Continuing in the UEFA Conference League, Trabzonspor drew 0-0 away against Switzerland’s St. Gallen and 1-1 at home. They were eliminated in the penalty shootout by the Swiss team, ending their European journey.
