‘We Tried Something Different’ – Lee Carsley Reflects on England’s Experiment

Lee Carsley acknowledged that England were the inferior side in their 2-1 home defeat to Greece on Thursday. The Three Lions suffered a late heartbreak as Greece’s Vangelis Pavlidis scored his second goal deep into stoppage time, moments after Jude Bellingham appeared to salvage a draw for England.

The defeat leaves England second in their Nations League group, with Greece now at the top after securing three wins in three matches. Carsley, who won his first two games as interim manager, experienced his first loss and conceded that the visitors deserved the victory.

Lee Carsley’s Reaction

Speaking to ITV, Carsley said: “We were second best for a lot of tonight, it is disappointing. You’re going to have setbacks, and it’s important we respond.”

He explained the tactical experiment that didn’t go as planned: “We tried something different by overloading the midfield. We experimented for 20 minutes yesterday, but it didn’t come off. It’s unrealistic to expect too much, and we’ll have to try again.”

Carsley also reflected on the goals conceded: “All the goals were from mistakes, which is disappointing. We tried something different, but it doesn’t change anything. My remit is to do the three camps.”
