In a statement, West Ham urged everyone to respect Antonio and his family’s privacy during this difficult time. The club added: “We will make no further comment this evening, but a further update will be issued in due course.”
The accident took place in Epping on Saturday afternoon, with Essex County Fire and Rescue Service attending the scene at 1:02 pm. Firefighters worked to free a man trapped in his car, and by 1:45 pm, the casualty was in the care of the Ambulance Service. Essex Police are investigating a serious crash involving a Ferrari and are appealing for witnesses and dashcam footage.
West Ham also expressed their “thoughts and prayers” for Antonio, his family, and friends. The 34-year-old Jamaica international, who joined the club from Nottingham Forest in 2015, has scored 68 goals in 268 Premier League appearances for the Hammers.
In West Ham’s next Premier League match against Wolves on Monday (20:00 GMT), Antonio’s absence will be felt, but the club has not made further comments regarding his recovery at this stage.
Support for Antonio pours in from other clubs, with Premier League sides including Arsenal, Chelsea, and Manchester City sending their best wishes. The Premier League also extended its thoughts and prayers to Antonio, his family, and all at West Ham.
Antonio is West Ham’s record Premier League scorer and has scored once in 15 appearances this season. His goal came in a 4-1 victory against Ipswich in early October. The striker was an integral part of David Moyes’ Europa Conference League-winning squad, starting in the 2-1 final victory over Fiorentina in 2023.
Antonio’s career has spanned several clubs, starting at non-league Tooting & Mitcham before moving into professional football with Reading. He has also had spells with Cheltenham, Southampton, and Colchester. Southampton, Reading, Sheffield Wednesday, and Colchester have all posted messages of support for Antonio, as has Jamaica, where he has earned five goals in 21 appearances.
Former England manager Steve McClaren, now in charge of the Jamaican national team, also shared his support, wishing Antonio a speedy recovery. McClaren said: “On behalf of the entire group of players, support staff, and technical staff, I would like to wish Michail a speedy recovery. Our thoughts and prayers are with him at this time.”
