WSL Round-Up: Tottenham Hammer Crystal Palace, Liverpool Held by Leicester in Opening Weekend Action

Newly-promoted Crystal Palace faced a tough debut in the Women’s Super League (WSL) as they suffered a 4-0 defeat to Tottenham at Brisbane Road. Fresh signing Hayley Raso, who recently joined Spurs from Real Madrid, opened the scoring in the 19th minute, giving the hosts a 1-0 lead at the break.

In the second half, Tottenham extended their advantage with goals from Jessica Naz, Drew Spence, and Olga Ahtinen, sealing a comprehensive victory. Palace’s challenging start to life in the top tier was further compounded in stoppage time when Brooke Aspin was sent off for a second bookable offence in the 94th minute.

Liverpool Held by Leicester

Meanwhile, Liverpool’s opening match in their new home at St Helens Stadium ended in a 1-1 draw against Leicester. The Reds took a first-half lead through Sophie Roman Haug’s header, but Leicester managed to equalize in the second half, earning a point in a closely contested encounter.

The opening weekend of the 2024-25 WSL season saw Tottenham off to a flying start, while Liverpool’s bid to make a strong debut at their new venue was tempered by a resilient Leicester side.
