Gerard Pique Proposes Radical Changes to Football

In an attempt to quell growing resentment over the packed football schedule, former Barcelona player Gerard Pique has proposed a drastic solution: making adjustments that would result in “more exclusive experiences” while lowering the amount of games players must play.

Pique’s suggestion is made at a time when the football community is struggling to deal with players’ mounting expectations as a result of a packed calendar. The European Leagues Association and FIFPRO Europe have filed a complaint against FIFA with the European Union’s antitrust authorities, citing their concerns about the international match schedule’s relentlessness and its impact on player weariness and injuries.

What Got Spoken During Leaders Week

Pique discussed the physical toll that the present schedule has on players during her speech at The Summit, which was held as part of Leaders Week London. She brought up the issue of matches being scheduled every three days.

“Players are now complaining that they are getting injured because there are too many games. We don’t have time to relax in the summer since there are games every three days.” Pique said, bringing up a concern that many players have brought up recently.

“I think fewer games should be played. Approach the leagues and suggest that they create leagues with 16 teams rather than 20.”

Revenue and Player Welfare are Balanced

Pique stressed the need to put players’ welfare first and make the game easier for fans to follow, even though he understands the financial reasons for expanding the number of contests.
