‘LAWSON ON ALONSO: “HE THREATENED ME AND FOLLOWED THROUGH”’

Fernando Alonso described his battle with Liam Lawson during the sprint race in Austin as unnecessary. Lawson claimed that Alonso threatened him during the race. The tension between Alonso and Lawson continued after the 2024 America Grand Prix sprint race.

Lawson alleged that Alonso threatened him due to the incidents during the race, while Alonso dismissed Lawson’s behavior as unnecessary.

Lawson stated that Alonso said to him, “I’m going to beat you,” and added, “I think he followed through. He was really angry, and I don’t understand why he was so upset.”

“We were fighting for 16th place, and I don’t know why he was so mad. What’s done is done; I hope we can move past this and move on,” he said.

Lawson also stated that he did not understand the reason behind Alonso’s reaction, saying, “It didn’t affect me much; he had a bad race, so I understand why he was upset. But if I had made a mistake, I would have been penalized anyway.”

Although Alonso reacted strongly to Lawson, he indicated that he did not want to prolong the issue, saying, “This is a matter between us. Everyone behaves as they wish on the track today. From my perspective, it was unnecessary.”

“Everyone can have different opinions, I understand that, but what happened today was unnecessary.”

Alonso mentioned that the incident reminded him of a similar situation he had two years ago with Lance Stroll, saying, “We were almost in an accident on the straight, going 300 km/h, and we were very close to each other. If one of us hadn’t lifted off the throttle, a crash would have been inevitable.”

Finally, Alonso stated, “I don’t want to talk more about this issue. If you want to discuss qualifying, I’m open to that, but this incident isn’t that important,” thus closing the topic.
