What Do These Ancelotti Statements Mean for Alonso?

He is Leverkusen’s title-maker. Bayer’s rise began with the arrival of coach Xabi Alonso (42) – with the double as the crowning achievement.

But how long will the Spaniard remain on the bench of the factory club?

Alonso has a contract until 2026, but his departure could be looming next summer. When approached by his former clubs Liverpool and Bayern Munich in the spring, he clearly committed to Leverkusen – but only for the current season.

It was widely believed that Real Madrid would try to sign him next summer as Carlo Ancelotti’s (65) successor.

All the more surprising are the recent statements from the Madrid coach. Ancelotti said: “Being at Real Madrid, the best club in the world, feels very special. I would like to stay here for many more years. I don’t have an expiration date here. I will continue as long as I enjoy the job.”

Officially, the Italian’s contract, having won the Champions League three times with Real Madrid, runs until 2026 – just like Alonso’s at Bayer. He last extended it in 2023, at which time there were rumors about his departure from Real. Ancelotti was heavily linked with the Brazil national team job. But the move did not materialize.

There’s no question: Alonso’s path leads to an even bigger club than Bayer Leverkusen. Real Madrid would be a logical step. As a player, the Spaniard wore the Real Madrid jersey from 2009 to 2014, winning La Liga in 2012 and the Champions League in 2014 before moving to Bayern Munich.
