Report: Chelsea’s stance on shock transfer for Liverpool star revealed
- Chelsea linked with big move for Liverpool goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher
- Ireland stopper valued at £35m
- Reports play down chances of future deal
Chelsea are not believed to be pursuing a move for Liverpool goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher despite rumours of a £35m bid.
The Blues signed Filip Jorgensen during the summer as competition for current starter Robert Sanchez, whose inconsistent form has seen some fans call for a high-level replacement to be signed in January.
Reports in the English media named Kelleher as a potential target, with a £35m bid claimed to be in the works, but numerous outlets have since played down any links between Chelsea and the Republic of Ireland international.
Indeed, Fabrizio Romano insists Chelsea are not working on a deal to sign a new goalkeeper as it stands, with manager Enzo Maresca still keeping faith in Sanchez for the time being.
While Chelsea may not be interested, Kelleher will be hoping a line of suitors form during the January transfer window after reiterating his desire to leave the club in search of first-team football.
Kelleher came through Liverpool’s academy and has operated as cover for the starting goalkeeper since 2019, being afforded just 20 Premier League appearances during that time.
Alisson remains Liverpool’s preferred starter and the Reds began to prepare for a future without the Brazilian when they signed Giorgi Mamardashvili during the summer. The Georgia international will move to Anfield next year.
Kelleher, who turns 26 later this month, is keen to become a starter in his own right and is likely to be sold soon as he approaches the final 18 months of his contract.
