Roger Federer Previews ‘Bittersweet’ 2024 Laver Cup and Offers Predictions

Roger Federer, tennis legend and long-time Laver Cup supporter, has touched down in Berlin ahead of the 2024 edition of the tournament. Reflecting on his time as a player, Federer recalled some of his fondest memories and shared his thoughts on who has the upper hand in this year’s competition.

Federer officially retired from tennis two years ago during the Laver Cup in London, an emotional moment recently captured in the documentary Federer: Twelve Final Days on Amazon Prime. Despite stepping away from the game, the Swiss icon admits that every return to the Laver Cup brings back those powerful memories.

“Just being on the bench with Bjorn Borg, being in the locker room with Novak, Rafa, and Murray … has been incredible. The support of the best players in the world is a very special feeling.” Federer said.

As for the 2024 Laver Cup, Federer believes Team Europe, led by first-time participant Carlos Alcaraz and supported by stars like Daniil Medvedev, Stefanos Tsitsipas, and Alexander Zverev, are the “heavy favorites” in singles. However, Federer acknowledged that Team World, who won all three doubles matches last year to defend their 2022 title, has the advantage in pairs. Ultimately, Federer predicts that the home team, Team Europe, will ride the support of the Berlin crowd to victory.

This year’s Laver Cup also features three debutants: Alcaraz, Alejandro Tabilo, and Thanasi Kokkinakis (who previously appeared as an alternate). Grigor Dimitrov returns to the event for Team Europe, having last participated in the inaugural 2017 edition.
