Was Bono’s Decision Not to Move to Ferrari with Hamilton the Right Choice?

Rob Smedley believes that Peter Bonnington’s decision not to follow Lewis Hamilton to Ferrari was the right one, despite their nearly 12-year partnership coming to an end. After Hamilton announced earlier this year that he would leave Mercedes for Ferrari, there were speculations about Bono also making the switch. However, Mercedes put those rumors to rest by extending Bono’s contract in August and promoting him to chief race engineer.

Smedley, who previously worked as Massa’s race engineer at Ferrari before moving to Williams, stated in the “Formula For Success” podcast, “When a seven-time world champion comes to work for your team, I don’t think he needs to bring someone with him.” He emphasized that following a driver as a race engineer can be a risky move, stating, “I have always said that it is quite a dangerous game for a race engineer to follow a driver.”

“Because if the driver falls out of favor or decides after a year that it’s not right for him, he won’t be able to bring those around him with him. That’s why I think Lewis made the right decision.”

“I’m sure the team will embrace him. Once a driver like Lewis goes there, I’m certain the team will revolve around him.”

“He also needs to do his part and embrace the team culture.”

“When a seven-time world champion comes to your team, setting the engine aside, he’s choosing your team over one he’s worked with his entire life, suddenly giving up all of that legacy to choose you.”

“This gives you a significant boost in confidence,” he said.
