Jamie Gittens Breaks 23-Year-Old English Record with Goal Against Real Madrid

Jamie Gittens, a rising star for Borussia Dortmund, made history by being the youngest Englishman to score in a Champions League match against Real Madrid. Gittens broke Alan Smith’s record by scoring for Dortmund in their 5-2 loss at the Santiago Bernabeu at the age of just 20 years and 75 days.

Borussia Dortmund took the lead through Donyell Malen in a rematch of the Champions League final from the previous season, but Gittens’ historic goal made it 2-0. Gittens’ goal is still a noteworthy accomplishment even after Real Madrid’s ultimate comeback. Alan Smith’s long-standing record from 2001, when the Leeds United forward scored at the age of 20 years and 129 days in a 3-2 loss to Los Blancos, is surpassed by his goal at such a young age.
