Maloney Joins Abt for the 2024/25 Formula E Season

Formula 2 race winner Zane Maloney will join the Abt Formula E team ahead of the 2024/25 season, marking his debut in the fully electric championship later this year.

The 20-year-old driver will make his first Formula E appearance at the São Paulo E-Prix on December 7th and will begin pre-season testing in Valencia from November 4th to 7th.

Maloney, who also served as Sauber Formula 1’s reserve driver this year, will become the first driver from Barbados to race in Formula E.

Previously, Maloney worked as a test and reserve driver for Andretti over the last two seasons, participating in rookie testing sessions in Berlin, Rome, and Misano. He also had the opportunity to test the new Gen3 Evo car, powered by Lola and Yamaha’s first-ever joint power unit.

Speaking to Autosport, Maloney said, “I’m looking forward to this challenging task, and it’s a great opportunity to join Abt, Lola, and Yamaha on this new journey.”

“Working under such a great group of people is a big step for my career.”

“At the moment, I don’t have any specific expectations of where we’ll be. The pressure is off, and I’m just focused on improving every day.”

Maloney is currently third in the Formula 2 standings and had an impressive start to the season, winning both the sprint and main races at the opening event in Bahrain for Rodin Motorsport. However, he will miss the final two rounds in Qatar and Abu Dhabi due to his new Formula E commitments.

Maloney will replace Swiss driver Nico Müller, who moved to Andretti, and will team up with Formula E veteran Lucas di Grassi at Abt.

Abt CEO Thomas Biermaier commented, “We are looking forward to having Zane as part of our team in Season 11, and he’s already brought a fresh energy in the early days of working together.”

“Supporting young talent has been a long-standing tradition at Abt, and it was clear that we would continue this path in Formula E as well.”

This season marks the first year of the new partnership between Abt, Lola, and Yamaha. Di Grassi has expressed that he is “very pleasantly surprised” by the team’s progress.

Maloney also acknowledged that the chance to join prestigious brands at the beginning of their journey was a motivating factor in joining the project.

“I see this as an opportunity and, of course, an exciting one.”

“If I were 35 years old, I’d probably have a different perspective, but I’m young and ready to take on the challenge of helping to develop the team alongside some fantastic engineers and learn from the much more experienced Lucas.”

“I’m looking forward to it. We don’t know where we’ll end up, but I’m optimistic, and I know everyone in the team is highly motivated to be at the front of the grid.”

“I don’t know how quickly that will happen, but I know they’ve done their best to prepare both themselves and me for this season.”

The announcement made on Wednesday means that Maloney is now the only driver on the grid yet to start a Formula E race.

ERT remains the only team that hasn’t confirmed its driver lineup after racing with Dan Ticktum and Sergio Sette Camara last season.
