MCLAREN: “OUR PRIORITY HAS NEVER BEEN THE PILOTS CHAMPIONSHIP”
McLaren says that carrying Lando Norris to the pilots’ championship has never been his main goal, the team has always focused on the teams’ championship.
Lando Norris, who started the Brazilian Grand Prix in the pole position, had a great advantage to close the point gap in the championship due to Max Verstappen starting from the 17th place. But after a lack of speed on wet ground, driving errors, brake crash issues, and a poorly timed red flag, the McLaren driver finished the race in sixth place. Verstappen, on the other hand, reached its first win after June.
With this result, Verstappen increased the point difference in the championship to 62.Although the outcome in Brazil was a disappointment to Norris, McLaren said there was no change in his approach, because his focus was already the teams’ championship.
McLaren team boss Andrea Stella said, “I don’t think this will change anything in terms of the teams’ championship.”
“This has always been our priority. Even when we gave team orders to support one driver or the other, this was secondary for us compared to the teams’ championship.”
“I don’t think Lando feels any special pressure on the pilots’ championship. In fact, we were all enjoying this adventure.”
“When the tires are locked like in Brazil, I blame the vehicle, not the pilot, I examine why the vehicle behaves this way in these conditions.”
“Mathematically, we are still in the pilots’ championship fight and we will try to win the upcoming races for both Lando and Oscar.”
“Las Vegas will potentially be more of a Ferrari track, but we expect the last two tracks to be good for us.”
“As I said, the teams’ championship has always been our priority and will continue to be,” he said.
