New Bristol City Boss Stephen Kirby Embraces Promotion Pressure: “I Want to Win Every Game”

Stephen Kirby, the new manager of Bristol City Women, has expressed his determination to lead the club back to the Women’s Super League (WSL). Taking on his first managerial role, Kirby left the coaching staff at Leicester City Women to join Bristol City, who have started the season with two draws in the Women’s Championship.

Kirby, who signed a two-year contract, is confident in his ability to push for promotion:

“I want to get the team promoted. I am ready for that, and my focus will never be any different. I want to win every game. We think we can challenge and do well in the league this year.”

With Bristol City having been without a manager since Lauren Smith stepped down shortly before the season began, Kirby acknowledged the less-than-ideal timing of his appointment. However, he feels prepared for the challenge: “I’ve been preparing for a head coach role for a while now, and when this opportunity came about, I knew it was the right one for me. The timing wasn’t ideal, but you have to be ready for the moment.”

Bristol City will face the London City Lionesses on Sunday, and Kirby understands the pressure that comes with leading a team aiming for promotion. “There is pressure on us to perform, but if you are going to be a leader in any role, there is pressure. We have to twist it and see the positives in that.”
