Andy Mangan’s Real Madrid Move Blocked After Work Permit Denial

Stockport Coach Andy Mangan’s Real Madrid Move Blocked Due to Work Permit Issue

Stockport assistant coach Andy Mangan’s proposed move to Real Madrid has hit a major roadblock after his work permit application was rejected. The 38-year-old former striker, who had stints with Tranmere and Shrewsbury, was set to join the La Liga giants to work under manager Carlo Ancelotti, but his switch was contingent on securing a work permit.

It’s understood that Mangan’s application, which could have taken up to nine months to process, has been denied by the Spanish government, effectively halting the move for now. Mangan has a connection to Real Madrid’s staff, having worked with Carlo Ancelotti’s son, Davide, during his Uefa coaching badge course.

Mangan only joined Stockport this summer, following their promotion from League Two under manager Dave Challinor. The team is currently unbeaten and sitting second in League One after four matches.

The ex-forward enjoyed a long playing career in the lower leagues, representing clubs like Tranmere, Forest Green, and Accrington, and earning promotion from the National League three times. He also gained experience as a coach, working alongside Joey Barton at Fleetwood and Bristol Rovers, even stepping in as caretaker manager after Barton’s dismissal in 2023.
