Juan Izquierdo tragically passed away at the age of 27 after suffering a cardiac arrhythmia during a Copa Libertadores match against São Paulo.

WHAT HAPPENED?

The Uruguayan player lost consciousness in the 84th minute of the Round of 16 match in Brazil on August 22nd and was rushed to the ICU at Albert Einstein Hospital. The former Montevideo Wanderers player had been receiving medical treatment after collapsing, but the hospital announced on Tuesday night that, according to ESPN, he had suffered brain death following cardiopulmonary arrest.

NACIONAL’S STATEMENT

Nacional confirmed Izquierdo’s tragic passing with a statement on X:

“With profound sadness and shock, Club Nacional has learned of the passing of our beloved player Juan Izquierdo. We extend our deepest condolences to his family, friends, teammates, and loved ones. All of Nacional mourns his irreplaceable loss. R.I.P. Juan, you will forever be with us.”

‘SOUTH AMERICAN FOOTBALL IS IN MOURNING’

Uruguay suspended all football activities last weekend due to concerns over Izquierdo’s health. CONMEBOL President Alejandro Dominguez expressed his condolences to the player and his family, stating:

“The pain and sorrow are indescribable. May he rest in peace. I wish strength to his family and friends.”

Brazilian Football Federation President Ednaldo Rodrigues announced that there would be a minute of silence in all matches organized by the federation on Wednesday, in memory of Izquierdo, who also played for Cerro, Peñarol, and Uruguay’s Liverpool.
