Juan Roman Riquelme Confident Lionel Messi Will Lead Argentina at 2026 World Cup, Praises Inter Miami Star for ‘Reinventing Himself’

Juan Roman Riquelme has expressed confidence that Lionel Messi will lead Argentina at the 2026 World Cup, highlighting how the football icon has “reinvented himself” at Inter Miami.

Messi, who won his first major international trophy in 2021 by leading Argentina to Copa America glory, followed up by guiding his nation to a historic World Cup win in Qatar in 2022. Having completed what many consider a perfect football career, Messi admitted he had achieved all his goals in the sport.

Despite some doubts about Messi’s participation in the 2026 World Cup, Riquelme, his former Barcelona and Argentina teammate, has no doubts. He believes that Messi, now 37, will once again take the global stage, especially after helping Argentina defend their Copa America title in 2024. Argentina is already being considered one of the favorites for the 2026 tournament.
