UEFA Admits Referee Error in EURO 2024

The UEFA Referees Committee has acknowledged a wrong decision regarding a penalty incident during the match between Spain and Germany at EURO 2024.

Following the tournament, hosted by Germany and concluded with Spain’s victory, a referee report was released. According to a report from ESPN, the UEFA Referees Committee recognized an error in the quarter-final match between Spain and Germany.

What Happened?
During the quarter-final match, a shot from Germany’s Jamal Musiala struck Spain’s Marc Cucurella’s hand. Referee Anthony Taylor did not award a penalty, and there was no alert from VAR.

The UEFA Referees Committee’s report stated, “Hand interventions that stop a shot on goal should be penalized more harshly, and in most cases, a penalty should be awarded unless the defender’s arm is very close to the body or above it.”

Toni Kroos Reacts
Toni Kroos, who retired from football this summer, commented on UEFA’s admission of the mistake. According to Bild, Kroos said, “It took them nearly three months to understand something that almost everyone saw as a handball. This is extremely reassuring for me.”
