Wojciech Szczesny Makes Big Impression on Barcelona Teammates
After joining Barcelona, Wojciech Szczesny has already won over his teammates, and fellow goalie Iñaki Peña has hailed the Polish veteran as a “phenomenon.” Although he has not yet made his Catalan giants debut, Szczesny, who joined the team after Marc-André ter Stegen sustained a season-ending ACL injury, has already started practicing with Hansi Flick’s team.
Szczesny unexpectedly returned to football after declaring his retirement from the game the previous season when Barcelona called in response to Ter Stegen’s tragic injury. Barcelona quickly expanded their goalkeeping options by signing the seasoned 34-year-old as a free agent.
Healthy Rivalry with Peña
Despite Szczesny’s arrival, Barça manager Hansi Flick has stated that the Polish veteran and current stand-in Iñaki Peña will compete for the starting goalkeeper job. Peña has been quite supportive of his new teammate despite the competition, calling him a “phenomenon” and complimenting Szczesny’s extensive expertise.
