Nico Williams Sets His Number One Goal

Athletic Bilbao and Spain national team star Nico Williams has declared the fight against racism as his number one goal. In an interview with the Spanish newspaper El Mundo, Williams expressed his determination to combat this issue following the racist attacks experienced by many black footballers, including Real Madrid’s Vinicius Jr.

FIGHTING RACISM IS MY NUMBER ONE GOAL”

Emphasizing the important role that black footballers have in the fight against racism, Williams stated, “My brother Inaki Williams (Bilbao and Ghana national team player) and I have an important duty as black individuals, which is to fight against racism. This is my number one goal. As a public figure, I need to stand firm to contribute to this struggle.”

Williams also noted that Spain is on the right path and that progress must continue, saying, “I am very happy to see Spain making progress. There will always be those who try to create a negative image of immigrants, but they are the minority. Many people come to Spain to earn a living, to obtain a future they can’t have in their home countries, and to provide a better life for their children. I will do everything I can to help immigrants live better lives.”

Last season, Williams faced racist abuse from Atletico Madrid fans, leading the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) to impose a two-match partial stadium closure on Atletico Madrid’s south stand.

The increase in racist incidents in Spain has prompted the RFEF and La Liga to engage in various anti-racism initiatives. In June, a Valencia court issued a conviction for racist insults in football stadiums for the first time in the country.

A Mallorca fan was sentenced to 12 months of suspended prison for racist insults directed at Vinicius Jr. and Villarreal player Samuel Chukwueze last month. Additionally, a young person who racially insulted Real Madrid’s Aurelien Tchouameni received a one-year stadium ban and fines.
